Kremlin Calls for Global Pressure on Kiev
Spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed hope on Monday that US President Donald Trump is quietly exerting such pressure behind the scenes.
Earlier this week, Trump revealed a plan in which NATO allies backing Kiev would buy American-made arms to support Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
He also threatened to impose sanctions on Russia and its trading partners if hostilities are not ended within 50 days. However, no similar ultimatum was given to Ukraine.
“There were a lot of remarks about [Trump’s] disappointment [with Russian President Vladimir Putin], but we want to hope that in parallel to that, pressure is being applied to the Ukrainian side,” Peskov told reporters.
He added, “It appears that the Ukrainian side takes all statements of support as signals to continue war, not as signals for peace.”
In his public remarks, Trump has shifted blame between Moscow and Kiev for the stalled progress toward the resolution he seeks.
Recently, his comments have concentrated more on criticizing Russia’s actions.
