Czech Government Faces No-Confidence Vote
This comes in the aftermath of an intense and lengthy parliamentary discussion surrounding a disputed bitcoin contribution made to the Ministry of Justice.
The proposal, initiated by the opposition ANO party and backed by the far-right Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) group, originates from the Ministry’s acceptance of a billion-crown cryptocurrency donation from a convicted individual, as reported by the Czech publication Ceske Noviny.
The incident sparked significant public backlash and prompted the resignation of Justice Minister Pavel Blazek. Nevertheless, opposition members continue to call for the removal of Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura, whom they accuse of being previously aware of the donation.
The Chamber of Deputies halted its debate late Tuesday evening following more than 13 hours of uninterrupted discussions.
The dialogue resumed Wednesday morning, with a conclusive vote anticipated later in the day.
Although the government has faced intense criticism from its opponents, it is still predicted to withstand the challenge.
The ANO and SPD factions together hold 91 out of 200 seats in the lower house—ten short of the 101 necessary to dismantle the ruling coalition.
Meanwhile, Czech President Petr Pavel previously cautioned that dismissing the government just a few months before the planned national elections could result in increased political uncertainty.
