Peace filled with tension return to Suweida

(MENAFN) A tense but calm atmosphere has settled over the southern Syrian city of Suweida following a week of intense violence involving Druze fighters, Bedouin gunmen, and government forces, according to reports from monitoring groups.

Fighting reportedly came to a halt on Sunday after the government, led by Islamist factions, announced that Bedouin militants had retreated from the mainly Druze-populated city "after days of bloody battles and chaos," according to statements from monitoring sources.

This relative calm came shortly after the Syrian president declared a ceasefire on Saturday, though the clashes continued for a time before subsiding.

The violence has taken a heavy toll. More than 1,000 people have reportedly lost their lives in the conflict, and the city is now facing a critical shortage of medical supplies, monitoring sources said.

The United Nations migration agency confirmed on Sunday that at least 128,000 individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to the escalating unrest.

"Activists have reported that Suweida has been experiencing a cautious calm since the early hours of Sunday morning," the monitoring group noted.

In an effort to ease tensions, Syrian security forces have reportedly blocked access to the city for tribal groups by erecting earth barriers along major roads. Only emergency vehicles, such as ambulances, are being allowed through.

The city remains under the control of local Druze fighters, while tribal armed groups have pulled back from several parts of the surrounding province, according to the latest updates.
