Japan vows continuous backing of Ukraine’s lasting peace
Iwaya assured Sybiha that Japan would “continue to support Ukraine's efforts to realize a just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.”
The two foreign ministers engaged in an open discussion about the ongoing situation in Ukraine and recent international developments, according to official reports.
The renewed commitment from Tokyo comes alongside Sybiha’s announcement that Ukraine is prepared to partner with Japan in drone technology, suggesting the joint manufacture of drones.
"Now we are the leaders in the world in producing drones ... We are ready to share with Japan our experience, and to cooperate in producing, for example, drones" that will be "mutually beneficial," Sybiha said during an interview in Tokyo.
He highlighted the possibility of focusing on drones designed for agricultural purposes and intelligence gathering, noting Japan’s constitutional restrictions on exporting military equipment.
Japan has contributed billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s reconstruction and has implemented sanctions on Russia over its conflict with Kyiv.
Sybiha’s visit to Japan, alongside Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska, included participation in a forum centered on Japan’s assistance for rebuilding Ukraine. During the event, 29 agreements spanning various sectors were signed.
