Lithuanian PM quits post

(MENAFN) Lithuania’s Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas announced on Monday that he is stepping down, leading to the resignation of the entire Cabinet.

“At today’s government meeting, I declared my decision to resign as prime minister and that the 19th Government of Lithuania is stepping down,” Paluckas said, according to public broadcaster LRT.

He will formally submit his resignation to President Gitanas Nauseda, who is expected to nominate a new prime minister within 15 days. The parliament will then need to approve the nominee, who will have another 15 days to present a new cabinet and government program.

The current ruling coalition, made up of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), Nemunas Dawn, and the Democrats “For Lithuania,” holds 86 out of 141 parliamentary seats and may see changes once the new government forms.

Paluckas, who also serves as LSDP party chairman, announced his resignation last Thursday after President Nauseda gave him two weeks to publicly address allegations related to past business dealings and ethical concerns or else step down.
