India approves defense purchase to enhance capabilities of its armed forces

(MENAFN) India has approved defense procurements worth approximately $7.6 billion to enhance the operational capabilities of its armed forces, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday.

The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, has authorized a wide range of upgrades and new acquisitions. These include the purchase of additional BrahMos missiles, armed drones, and modernization proposals submitted by the military services.

The approval covers long-term maintenance and support plans for key existing systems, including Boeing aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force and a comprehensive annual maintenance contract for the S-400 air defense missile system. The Indian Navy will also receive upgrades to its current Barak-1 missile system.

The Indian Air Force’s Saksham and Spyder weapon systems will be upgraded to allow integration with the Integrated Air Command and Control System, aimed at strengthening the overall air defense network. The defense ministry also confirmed the procurement of thermal imaging and night vision equipment for the Army’s BMP infantry fighting vehicles, as well as Compact Autonomous Surface Craft for the Navy and advanced mountain radars for the Air Force.

These decisions underscore India’s ongoing push to modernize its defense infrastructure and maintain a strong deterrent posture amid evolving regional security dynamics.
