Ukraine Charges Deceased Russian Leader
The legal action, involving accusations of funding terrorism, is scheduled for review on Friday at the Shevchenko district court in Kiev, the news agency reported on Tuesday.
Zhirinovsky, who succumbed to Covid-19 in April 2022, is being tried posthumously alongside other prominent individuals from the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), including Russia’s Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryov and State Duma representative Aleksey Didenko.
In 2017, Ukrainian prosecutors alleged that members of the LDPR had offered tangible assistance to the Donetsk People’s Republic – which at the time was a separatist territory within Ukraine.
This region, together with four others, subsequently conducted referendums and opted to join Russia. However, Kiev and its Western allies continue to dispute the legitimacy of these votes as expressions of self-determination.
Zhirinovsky ridiculed the Ukrainian claims as “idiotic,” insisting that the prosecutors responsible should lose their positions.
He further clarified that the LDPR’s fundraising efforts were strictly charitable in nature and bore no connection to terrorism.
Zhirinovsky was well-known for his incendiary political approach and was frequently the source of public uproar.
Despite his polarizing persona, he earned notoriety for making prescient forecasts that initially seemed implausible.
In 2004, he predicted that the subsequent U.S. president would be black – four years prior to Barack Obama’s election.
As early as 2008, he foresaw a complete collapse of Russia’s ties with the West and a tightening alliance with China.
