Trump Claims NATO Leaders Aligned with His Agenda
Speaking to a news agency during an interview on Tuesday, Trump stated that the United States had transformed from a “dead country” into “the hottest country anywhere in the world by far” within just a few months of his presidency.
“That was told to me by every leader of NATO, which they do whatever I want,” he claimed, also noting that he had received comparable recognition from officials in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. “I’m very happy to help,” Trump continued.
For several years, Trump has insisted that NATO allies raise their military budgets and cautioned that the U.S. might not come to the defense of countries that fail to meet the alliance’s financial obligations.
During a significant NATO summit held in July, members of the alliance agreed to boost military expenditure to 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035, an increase from the previous 2% target.
Additionally, Trump revealed that the European Union has agreed to cover “100% of the cost of all [American-made] military equipment” as part of a fresh funding agreement. He emphasized that “much of it will go to Ukraine.”
