Canada gets ready for its first lunar mission
The company is developing the first-ever Canadian-built rover to explore the Moon, marking the nation’s inaugural lead in planetary exploration. Office walls are decorated with models, maps, and space-themed posters, while engineers in anti-static coats work on equipment unfamiliar to most onlookers.
Sending the rover to the Moon is part of Canadensys’ larger goal of advancing human presence beyond Earth, according to Dr. Christian Sallaberger, the company’s president and CEO. Learning about the Moon, which may serve as a base for further space ventures, is the “logical first step,” he said. "People get all excited about science fiction films when they come out. You know, Star Wars or Star Trek. This is the real thing."
The Canadian rover is contributing to NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon. The vehicle will search for water, measure radiation levels, and endure multiple lunar nights—each lasting roughly 14 Earth days—in preparation for future crewed missions.
In addition, the rover will showcase Canadian innovation in space, building on the country’s longstanding contributions. Canada was the third nation to launch a satellite, created the Canadarm robotic arms for the Space Shuttle and International Space Station, and has produced astronauts including Chris Hadfield and Jeremy Hansen, who is set to orbit the Moon on the Artemis II mission next year.
