Polish President Urges WWII Reparations from Germany
(MENAFN) During ceremonies marking the anniversary of World War II, the President of Poland made a strong appeal for reparations from Germany, suggesting that this step could redefine the relationship between the two nations.
Speaking at the event, Karol Nawrocki declared, “In order to build a partnership built on truth and good relations, we must deal with the issue of reparations from the German state which, as Polish president, I unequivocally demand, for the common good,” as cited by a national public broadcaster.
He emphasized that “Reparations are not an alternative to historical amnesia,” underscoring Poland’s need for justice and transparency in its dealings with Germany.
Nawrocki stressed that as a key state on NATO’s eastern front, Poland deserves both recognition of historical facts and compensation for past suffering.
The president delivered his comments at a memorial event held on the Westerplatte peninsula in northern Poland.
This location is historically significant as it was here, 86 years ago, that shelling by the German warship Schleswig-Holstein marked the beginning of World War II in Europe.
The solemn occasion was attended by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, along with high-ranking officials and government ministers.
In contrast to Nawrocki’s historical focus, Tusk addressed contemporary issues, urging clarity in recognizing present-day adversaries.
He referred to Westerplatte as a "sacred place" dedicated to national heroes and stressed that Poland must never again fall victim to external aggression.
