U.S. Skips UN Universal Periodic Review Cycle in Geneva
OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told media that the Office is aware of and regrets the U.S. decision to withdraw from an important peer review process of the intergovernmental UN Human Rights Council, in which all UN member states regularly participate.
Shamdasani emphasized that the OHCHR will persist in its dialogue with the U.S. government alongside civil society, academia, businesses, and other key stakeholders regarding human rights concerns.
The UPR serves as a critical UN mechanism for member states to exchange evaluations and discuss human rights records. Since its inception in 2008, all 193 UN member countries have completed three cycles of review. The ongoing fourth cycle began in 2022, with the United States having participated in its previous assessments in 2010, 2015, and 2020.
