Trump Claims Iran Requested Truce

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that Iran’s new leadership had asked Washington for a ceasefire. He stated that the US would only consider such a request if the Strait of Hormuz is reopened, adding that military strikes on Iran would continue until then.

Trump described Iran’s new president as “less radicalized and far more intelligent” than previous leaders, and said the US could continue striking Iran “into oblivion” or “back to the Stone Ages.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei denied Trump’s claim, saying Tehran had not requested a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Axios cited US officials saying that discussions were ongoing about a possible ceasefire in exchange for reopening the strait. Trump is reportedly discussing the possibility both inside and outside his administration, though it is unclear whether these talks involve direct contact with Iran or intermediaries such as Pakistan.

Iranian officials have previously clarified that contacts with the US are limited to message exchanges, not formal negotiations. Trump has repeatedly described Iran’s current leadership as “much more reasonable,” claiming the US has achieved “total regime change” and noting communications with Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
